Leadership and Advocacy in Pain Medicine: Moving the Needle to Improve Practice and Patient Care
- Date/Time: Oct 19, 2024 @ 9:45AM
- Location: 111AB
- The purpose of this panel is to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the processes that contribute to effective leadership and advocacy in the field of pain medicine. Various societies and specialties, such as ASA, ASRA Pain Medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and neurosurgery, play a significant role in the realm of pain medicine. Each panelist has a wealth of experience, having served as presidents of pain societies or state boards. They have been actively involved in advocacy efforts and possess expertise in the evaluation of procedures. Their extensive background includes working closely with organizations such as ASA, AMA, ASRA, NASS, as well as state and national licensure bodies.
Fibromyalgia, Nociplastic Pain, and Central Sensitization: Anesthetic Considerations
- Date/Time: Oct 19, 2024 @ 1:30PM
- Location: 111AB
- Patients with central sensitization syndromes, nociplastic pain, and fibromyalgia present unique challenges when it comes to anesthesia. These individuals often exhibit heightened sensitivity to both noxious stimuli and pharmacologic agents. Understanding the pathophysiology behind nociplastic pain and central sensitization is crucial in effectively managing these patients during the perioperative period. Pharmacological agents commonly used to address fibromyalgia symptoms include pregabalin, duloxetine, dietary and nutritional supplements, as well as low-dose naltrexone, buprenorphine, cannabinoids, and psilocybins. The implications of continuing or discontinuing these medications during the perioperative period must be carefully considered, as they can impact anesthetic effectiveness and post-operative pain management.
ASRA Pain Medicine 2024: Transforming Pain Care and Education
- Date/Time: Oct 19, 2024 @ 2:45PM
- Location: 107AB
- At ASRA Pain Medicine, the primary objective is to provide comprehensive pain management solutions that encompass the entire range of pain experiences. This upcoming session will delve into various pain management strategies, spanning from acute to chronic pain, as well as transitional states. Moreover, the session will offer a preview of the topics that will be further explored at the ASRA Fall Pain Medicine meeting.
Principles for Good Perioperative Pain Management Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS)
- Date/Time: Oct 20, 2024 @ 10:30AM
- Location: 122B
- The prevalence of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) continues to have a profound and detrimental impact on our healthcare system, patients, and communities. Participation in this informative session is welcome as it delves into the comprehensive evaluation of patients’ medical, psychological, and pain history for perioperative management. They will explore the utilization of multimodal strategies to prevent and treat pain, as well as the importance of coordinating with healthcare providers to effectively address postoperative acute pain.
High Fidelity Simulation: Managing Adverse Events In Intervention Pain
- Date/Time: Oct 20, 2024 @ 2:45PM
- Location: 111AB
- Interventional pain procedures are generally considered safe, with life-threatening complications being rare. However, the low rate of complications can leave physicians ill-prepared to effectively manage them, which can have devastating consequences. The panel consists of a diverse group of experienced pain physicians, each with over five years of practice. They will be present real cases of pain procedure complications in order to help practitioners recognize warning signs and take preventive measures. Specifically, they will be discussing a range of complications, including cervical epidural hematoma following an epidural steroid injection, unintended intramedullary placement of an intrathecal catheter, migration of an intrathecal catheter into the fourth ventricle, leakage of cement into the spinal canal during percutaneous vertebroplasty, airway compromise after a stellate ganglion block, inadvertent neuraxial injection of local anesthetic resulting in a high spinal, and disabling neurodeficit following a femoral nerve block in a patient with preexisting neuropathy.
- Also, highlighting the importance of strict adherence to published guidelines and a thorough understanding of relevant anatomy when performing these procedures.
Real Cases of Pain Procedure Complications: Root Cause Analyses and Preventive Measures
- Date/Time: Oct 20, 2024 @ 4:00PM
- Location: 103C
- Simulation plays a crucial role in training, especially for rare but critical events. Effective management of such events necessitates not only practice, but also teamwork. Pain clinicians possess diverse skill sets and come from various primary specialty backgrounds. Although serious incidents in pain management interventions are infrequent, there is always a possibility of acute life-threatening complications in procedures commonly performed in pain medicine. Utilizing simulated cases to teach crisis management skills can offer valuable education to pain practitioners.
Pain Bioskills Lab: Bedside Pain Procedures: Migraine and Cephalalgia Management With Ultrasound-Guided Craniofacial Blocks
- Date/Time: Oct 21, 2024 @ 9:30AM
- Location: 109AB
- In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to apply and review the sonoanatomy of different ultrasound-guided craniofacial blocks for migraines and cephalgia. These blocks can be performed at the bedside using ultrasound guidance and live models to address both acute and chronic pain.
