Life Course Epidemiology of Hip Osteoarthritis in Japan

- The prevalence of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in Japanese newborns has significantly decreased since the implementation of a primary prevention campaign in 1972-1973. This perinatal education initiative encouraged keeping newborns’ hips in a naturally flexed-leg position. This study examined the life course epidemiology of hip osteoarthritis (OA) in adolescent and adult patients, and to evaluate its correlation with exposure to the primary prevention campaign for DDH.

A Novel Conceptual Model for Human Heat Tolerance

- The concept of human heat tolerance lacks a universally accepted definition or clear physiological basis. Instead, it is typically examined in terms of comparison or relative measures. Our proposal suggests utilizing environmental boundaries for heat balance, taking into account factors such as metabolic rate and clothing. This approach involves identifying the conditions under which heat stress becomes unmanageable for a specific metabolic rate and level of clothing. By doing so, we aim to introduce a new metric for assessing heat tolerance in individuals.

Minimally Invasive Approaches to Haglund’s Deformity and Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy: A Contemporary Review

- Traditional open procedures for Haglund’s deformity (HD) and insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) have shown favorable outcomes. However, the extended recovery time and potential complications such as wound problems and infections have led to the increased utilization of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques for treating these conditions. While the initial MIS methods primarily involved endoscopic surgery, percutaneous approaches are now becoming more prevalent.This study examines various MIS techniques, including endoscopic calcaneoplasty (Haglund resection), percutaneous Haglund resection, and percutaneous Zadek (dorsal closing wedge) calcaneal osteotomy. These innovative approaches offer promising alternatives to traditional open procedures, providing patients with potentially faster recovery times and reduced risk of complications.
