In the latest installment of our Guidelines International Series, we will be delving into the latest guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO). Established in 1948, WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that facilitates collaboration between nations, partners, and individuals to advance global health, ensure global security, and support marginalized populations. Their mission is to enable all individuals, regardless of their location, to achieve optimal health and well-being.

Each year, WHO consistently publishes a diverse range of international guidelines, with a total of nine guidelines already released in 2024. Below are this year’s guidelines thus far, along with their respective objectives.

2024 WHO Guidelines

WHO clinical treatment guideline for tobacco cessation in adults

  • Published: July 2, 2024
  • This guideline is designed for healthcare providers working in clinical and community settings where tobacco users may seek treatment. The recommendations on system-level interventions and policies outlined in this guideline are intended to guide policymakers and health service managers on how to improve the adoption and implementation of effective tobacco cessation interventions.

Guidelines for the treatment of human African trypanosomiasis

  • Published: June 28, 2024
  • The World Health Organization’s interim guidelines for the treatment of Gambiense Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), released in 2019, introduced the new medication fexinidazole as a therapeutic option. With its recent expansion of indications, fexinidazole is now also recommended for the treatment of Rhodesiense HAT. These updated guidelines encompass all of these changes, resulting in a significant reorganization of therapeutic options for both forms of the disease.

Fiscal policies to promote healthy diets: WHO guideline

  • Published: June 14, 2024
  • This guideline from the World Health Organization offers Member States recommendations and implementation considerations for fiscal policies aimed at promoting healthy diets. These policies include food and beverage taxation, as well as food subsidies designed to influence consumer behavior by reducing prices of specific products at the retail level.

Guidelines for the prevention of bloodstream infections and other infections associated with the use of intravascular catheters: part I: peripheral catheters

  • Published: May 12, 2024
  • These guidelines (Part 1) offer recommendations on the best practices for preventing BSIs and other infections linked to peripherally-inserted IV catheters. A forthcoming WHO guideline (Part 2), set to be released in 2024, will address infections associated with centrally-inserted intravascular catheters.

WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis: module 6: tuberculosis and comorbidities

  • Published: April 29, 2024
  • This document provides consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis, specifically focusing on Module 6: tuberculosis and comorbidities. These guidelines aim to summarize the most recent recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding tuberculosis and its associated comorbidities. This document is dynamic and will feature individual sections dedicated to each of the primary comorbidities or health-related risk factors associated with tuberculosis.

Consolidated guidelines on person-centred viral hepatitis strategic information: using data to support country scale-up of hepatitis prevention, diagnosis and treatment services

  • Published: April 9, 2024
  • This publication provides an overview of the approach recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for gathering, analyzing, reporting, disseminating, and utilizing strategic information on viral hepatitis at the subnational, national, and global levels. These guidelines enhance person-centered monitoring, with a focus on indicators that promote person-centered health services and the essential prevention, diagnosis, and treatment interventions.

Guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis, care and treatment for people with chronic hepatitis B infection

  • Published: March 29, 2024
  • The 2024 HBV guidelines have been updated to provide evidence-informed recommendations on key priority topics. These include expanded and simplified treatment criteria for adults and adolescents, as well as expanded eligibility for antiviral prophylaxis for pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HBV. Additionally, the guidelines focus on improving HBV diagnostics by utilizing point-of-care HBV DNA viral load and reflex approaches to HBV DNA testing. The guidelines also address who should be tested for HDV infection and how testing should be conducted. Furthermore, the guidelines outline approaches to promote the delivery of high-quality HBV services, including strategies to enhance adherence to long-term antiviral therapy and retention in care.

Guideline on haemoglobin cutoffs to define anaemia in individuals and populations

  • Published: March 5, 2024
  • The purpose of this guideline is to offer current, concise, evidence-based recommendations on utilizing hemoglobin concentrations to evaluate anemia and the most effective methods for measuring it in individuals and populations. The objective is to enhance the diagnosis of anemia, incorporating gender, equity, and human rights perspectives, with the goal of ensuring that no one is overlooked. This will help shape the development of nutrition and health policies.

Clinical management of diphtheria

  • Published: February 2, 2024
  • The World Health Organization’s Clinical Management of Diphtheria provides the latest recommendations for treating individuals with diphtheria. This comprehensive guide offers essential guidance for healthcare professionals on managing cases of diphtheria effectively.
