- A complicated intra-abdominal infection extends beyond the hollow viscus of origin into the peritoneal space or an otherwise sterile region of the abdominal cavity and is associated with peritonitis with or without abscess formation.
- The scope of this guideline includes acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis (both acalculous and calculous), acute cholangitis, acute diverticulitis, abdominal abscess, secondary bowel perforation, and acute necrotizing pancreatitis.
