| Option | Pros | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Non-opioid meds | Fewer side effects, effective for many types of pain | May not be enough alone for severe pain |
| Regional anesthesia / local blocks | Long-lasting targeted relief (e.g., Exparel, ON-Q) | May wear off in 1–3 days |
| Opioids | Stronger pain relief if needed short-term | Risk of side effects and dependence |
| Physical strategies | Ice, elevation, movement, breathing exercises | Require patient engagement |
The postsurgical pain toolkit summarizes key guidance from various organizations to support the reduction of postoperative pain in adults. Effective postsurgical pain control is critical to the timely recovery of patients undergoing various surgical procedures. The physiology of postsurgical pain involves multiple pain pathways; therefore, efficacious pain control requires a combination of medications that work additively and synergistically to interrupt both peripherally and centrally mediated pain signals. To ensure optimal postsurgical pain management, current guidelines recommend the use of a multimodal approach to analgesia, which may include opioid and nonopioid systemic agents, regional techniques, and local injections.
